Before diving into resources for quickly finding post-Mormon therapists, let me start by saying that I’m Dr. Dominic Schmuck, a secular post-Mormon psychologist, and the owner of TruU Psychology. While I am physically located in Utah, I offer telehealth appointments to clients in almost all U.S. states (click here for a list of all PSYPACT Participating States where I can practice teletherapy). If you want to connect with a post-Mormon therapist as quickly as possible, schedule a consultation call with me by clicking the button below, texting/calling 385-200-0204, or emailing dominic@truupsychology.com.

How to Find Post-Mormon Therapists Quickly

The Best Resource: The Mormon Mental Health Association (MMHA)

In my experience, the fastest way to find post-Mormon therapists is through the Mormon Mental Health Association (MMHA). This secular organization connects people with mental health professionals who understand the nuances of Mormonism, faith transitions, and religious trauma. Most of the providers on MMHA are ex-Mormon.

To get started, visit the MMHA website and click on “Find a Provider.” From there, select your state and browse licensed therapists in your area. Keep in mind that not all therapists listed are ex-Mormon. Some are active members or never-Mormons who specialize in working with those leaving the church. If having a post-Mormon therapist is important to you, ask potential providers directly about their background. Therapy should be a space where you feel fully understood and supported. So if having a post-Mormon therapist matters to you, directly ask any potential therapist you contact about whether they are post-Mormon.

Symmetry Counseling: A Utah-Based Option

If you're in Utah, another great resource is Symmetry Counseling, which has many therapists and coaches familiar with post-Mormon issues. They offer therapy, coaching, medication management, and ketamine-assisted therapy. However, not all Symmetry providers are post-Mormon, so be sure to inquire about their background before scheduling an appointment.

Does Insurance Cover Post-Mormon Therapy?

Do MMHA and Symmetry Counseling Providers Accept my Insurance?

Maybe. Each provider is different. If you’re in Utah, you’re more likely to find a post-Mormon therapist who accepts your insurance. However, just because a therapist is in-network and an ex-Mormon doesn’t mean they specialize in faith transitions, religious trauma, or other post-Mormon issues. It’s important to weigh the benefits of using insurance with the value of working with someone who truly understands your experience and specializes in your issues.

Using Out-of-Network Benefits for Therapy

If you can’t find an in-network post-Mormon therapist, don’t worry—your insurance's Out-of-Network (OON) benefits may cover a significant portion of therapy costs. Many therapists, including myself, provide superbills that you can submit to your insurance for reimbursement. Generally, most of my clients with OON benefits get back 30% to 100% of my session costs.

For an easier reimbursement process, I work with Thrizer, a service that automates OON claims, so you don’t have to manually submit superbills to your insurance.

Do I have Out-of-Network Benefits for Therapy?

It is best to call your insurance directly to inquire about your potential Out-of-Network benefits for mental health therapy. When you call them, ask about whether you have OON mental health therapy benefits, whether you have an OON deductible, and how much you could anticipate getting reimbursed for session costs. Alternatively, you can also create a free Thrizer account, enter your insurance details, and get an estimate of how much you’ll be reimbursed.

Therapy with TruU Psychology

At TruU Psychology, I specialize in therapy for faith transitions, religious trauma, relationship trauma, and life beyond Mormonism. Many of my clients seek therapy for anxiety, depression, life transitions, relationship struggles, or professional challenges - but they also want a therapist who understands the unique dynamics of Mormonism and post-Mormon life.
