Single Session Therapy: A Quick and Effective Approach

Updated: Apr 18

Single Session Therapy has been gaining popularity in recent years as an efficient and effective approach to address mental health concerns. While traditional therapy can be a long process, Single Session Therapy offers a targeted and focused approach to tackling specific issues. But can a single session really be effective?

therapy; single session therapy; one time meeting; single session coaching

The answer is yes, but it depends on the individual's needs and circumstances. Single Session Therapy can be very helpful for individuals who are not in the depths of despair but are experiencing difficulties and seeking guidance. It can also be helpful for people who want to check in on their mental health or gain a professional opinion on a specific issue.

One of the biggest advantages of Single Session Therapy is that it can be more accessible to people who may not have the time or financial resources for traditional therapy. Research indicates consistently that the first few sessions of therapy are actually the most effective in helping symptom reduction. Most commonly, the first time someone meets with a therapist, they will conduct a thorough diagnostic intake assessment. Not much therapy happens during the first meeting. In Single Session Therapy, we right away begin tackling your most concerning issue(s). In just one session, individuals can gain cognitive and behavioral tools to tackle their challenges on their own.

For whom is Single Session Therapy most Effective?

Single Session Therapy is most effective for individuals who have not undergone therapy or have only utilized therapy sporadically. Moreover, it can also be an ideal choice for those who prefer a periodic mental health check-in or cannot commit to traditional therapy due to monetary or time constraints. By providing focused attention to your immediate needs without delving into the complexities of your history or undertaking deep psychotherapy, Single Session Therapy can be incredibly beneficial.

Here is a sample of situations I personally consider to be a great fit for Single Session Therapy:

  • You experience a conflict with e.g. a friend, partner, parent, adult child, co-worker, or boss, and want to gain perspectives and ideas of how to handle the conflict.

  • You are experiencing a life transition that you mostly have a grasp on, but there are some pieces you want to talk with a professional about to make sense of or find solutions to.

  • You want to bounce ideas off of an unbiased psychologist.

  • You are facing a difficult decision.

  • You want to strategize about a difficult conversation that is coming up.

  • You are action-oriented and are looking for a solution to implement right now.

  • You are unsure whether you need or want to engage in "traditional therapy" but would really appreciate talking to a professional one-time about your situation and challenges.

  • You have never tried therapy, but want to meet with a Psychologist one-time before making any further decisions about whether or not to pursue therapy.

  • You have been to therapy before, but want to check in with a professional one time as a "booster."
